Gastrointestinal symptom incidence has been reported to affect 60-96% of ultra-endurance athletes during competition. Symptoms can range from mild discomfort and inconvenience to extremely severe that cause ultra-endurance activity reduced workload, cessation, or even withdrawal, including the need for medical attention during and extended to a prolonged period after the ultra-endurance event.
Thus, exercise-associated gastrointestinal symptom is multi-factorial and dynamic in nature, making it difficult and tricky to detect, manage, and treat.
